OKAPI Open-Source

Since my new Eclipse based IDE for ABL project will eventually supersede Okapi there is little interest for me to continue with it and thought could release it as open-source project. If anyone interested please let me know about your preferences on source code repositories, up until now I’ve put almost everything on SF.net but nowadays there seems to be other valid options to pick from.

Mind you this is not written in Progress ABL but built using Eclipse RCP, ANTLR parser and have dependencies on UML2 and Acceleo plug-ins.

Okapi – Database definition support

For those lazy programmers out-there that might have some time to kill in a cold winter Sunday a new release of Okapi is available for download, if interested use the Eclipse update-site as usual:

What’s new and worthy:

the reverse engineering module now support database definition files
there is an UML profile for OpenEdge available as well, while not mandatory it is required in order to have all OpenEdge Domain Specific Language features
help integrated in Eclipse help system

Looks like there was an error in build setting on the ‘profile’ plug-in that made it unavailable for the reverse engineering module… the issue was corrected and a new version uploaded on update site.

OKAPI Community Edition

A new version of OKAPI project was released today having a newly reverse engineering module included in the package.

For different reasons the open-source approach is not being considered anymore for the project, however a “community edition” license is available for non-commercial use.

Being still an on-going work the project will continue to have releases based on ‘release early, release often‘ philosophy common to most open-source projects, any feedback is as always more than welcome.

The new release is available through the project update site – http://www.ganimede.ro/mda/okapi/update.

Romanian & Hungarian PUG

As the newly appointed General Manager for EMEA, Dan Veitkus emphasized at this year EMEA PUG Challenge in Amsterdam last week, the Progress User Groups plays an important role in bringing PSC and their customers together in benefit of both parties.

Because of the fact that the customer base in Romania and Hungary is probably not as strong as in Germany or Netherlands we are looking to join forces in order to have at least one PUG in the region to serve the customers in both countries.

The benefits for the customers will be to get the chance to keep up with the latest developments and the technologies made available as well as sharing ideas and information on best practices or even promoting solutions to other Progress partners in the region. The number of participants from this region at EMEA PUG Challenge events is usually very limited and that might be not just because of the lack of interest. Being able to host such events (although at a more reduce scale of course) closer to them might prove to be more cost effective for the customers in the region leading to a more active Progress community and being able to easily disseminate new technologies and best practices to the ultimate target of creating more business opportunities for everyone.

Thanks to Dr. Thomas Mercer-Hursh initiative the EMEA PUG Challenge this year will host a ‘birds of a feather‘ session about Model Driven Development initiatives in Progress world. Okapi will be present at the show and hopefully the first version presented will include full round-trip engineering support.

If you have interests in that area come and join Dr. Thomas Mercer-Hurst, Julian Lyndon-Smith and myself each of us presenting different approaches to MDA as well as Rapid Application Development.

Given the ‘birds of a feather‘ model of the session this is supposed to be more like an interactive chat than a presentation, if there are any subjects in that area that you find particularly interesting and care to share them with us even before the session we will really love to hear from you. There is a mailing list where you can send us any comments, ideas, what ever you might find interesting and you can even make a subscription request if interested: mda.pug@ganimede.ro.
